Footprints in the Sand

Footprints in the Sand, a beautiful poem!

One night I dreamed a dream.
As I was walking along the beach with my Lord.
Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life.
For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand,
One belonging to me and one to my Lord.

After the last scene of my life flashed before me,
I looked back at the footprints in the sand.
I noticed that at many times along the path of my life,
especially at the very lowest and saddest times,
there was only one set of footprints.

This really troubled me, so I asked the Lord about it.
"Lord, you said once I decided to follow you,
You'd walk with me all the way.
But I noticed that during the saddest and most troublesome times of my life,
there was only one set of footprints.
I don't understand why, when I needed You the most, You would leave me."

He whispered, "My precious child, I love you and will never leave you
Never, ever, during your trials and testings.
When you saw only one set of footprints,
It was then that I carried you."

I was given this poem from my mother, it was in a little frame. Over the last four years I've been and still going through the most toughest and heart renching times of my life caused by little or no fault of my own. I feel I'm alone in all this but when I read this poem it makes me wonder if im been watched over through these hard times or, is I alone because I can't see no end of it.

This poem was taken from a book written by L E Modesitt more than 20 years ago, called the Magic of Recluse (1992). It is indeed inspired by the Bible but does not appear in the Bible in this form. Read Deuteronomy 1:31 ~ β€œand in the wilderness. There you saw how the Lord your God carried you, as a father carries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place

during the trials and defeat in my life I came across of this lovely poem. Every time I read it can't help to be emotional that it brings back those past moments of my life. At times when I read it I put it into prayer until I realized God did not forsake me. He truly carried me along the way. I walked along the beach with the Lord.

It was written for sure in 1963 by Harry Devore my great grandfather my mom was 8 years old. He wrote this one and many others alot of the others were lost over the years. My great grandfather was a good man and loved the good Lord dearly. He wanted no recognition for profit at all in writing this he only wanted the message to go out to the world which is a very strong message wonderful message.

When I was a teen I was going through the most difficult time of my life. I had went to live with my dad. So one day I had woken up early in the morning and opens the back door which I never do but for some reason I did that day. I had found this poem outside it was a wooden one and it was leans up words on the fence. So I grabbed and went inside and told my dad and step mom if they had thrown it away they said no. To my belive I think our Lord was telling me that he will be there for me no matter what.

One my friend's lost his father 2 weeks ago. As he struggled with his loss and suggested he read this poem to help him get through this difficult time. Sadly, I had to Euthanize my horse on Sunday. I've had my dear, sweet Rosie for 19 years while my heart was aching I reflected back on what I told my friend about this poem. Now it helps me through my emptiness. God is great! It was as if he was preparing me for the loss of my horse.

Bob- thank you . I love that my children want to learn about Jesus and GOD. Seems they were interested when I said they were the real super heros of this world ...not Spider-Man not superman!! But GOD, Jesus and the Holy Spirit ! I sometimes feel im not worthly of their love ! But try and talk myself everyday that I am. I feel like when I feel that , it's the devil trying to stray me away from the lord

Bob Schofield

Ms. Eringobrau!I commend you for seeking out the love of Jesus and teaching them right from wrong. I am reminded that most of us chose what church and what preacher or teacher we attach ourselves to! But the Disciples of Jesus didn't have that prerogative . You see Jesus chose all of them publicly. You and I have also been chosen by Jesus, to follow Him and the path He has laid out for us! He did this so that we may bear the fruit of His teaching when we accept Him as Lord and Savior. Jesus said ask anything in my name and the Father will give it to you. He (Jesus) then gave a command (John 15-17) "Love one another".

I am teaching my son and daughter about Jesus and GOD and read my 7 year old and 6 year old this poem...and started to weep. They asked"what's wrong mommy". I've done some terrible sins and my biggest fear is going to HELL and this makes me Remember how much he forgives and loves us!

I dont know who Margaret Fishback Powers is but she didnt write this poem completely. Most of it is taken directly from the 1936 poem Footprints in the Sand by Mary Stevenson. Powers tried to claim she wrote this in 1964 but Stevenson was awaded copyright on May 3rd 1997 after her 1939 text was forensically authenticated.

today i cried and felt as though satan had got me good, that he was the best at his game and he won. you see, this morning everything was finally going great. the homework was done, my youngest was at his best, not so much screaming and yelling as usual. the breakfast was done. kids off to school in time. but, of course, i was in and satan got me good. something very important for my one child was left out. so terrible was this that i broke down and cried. then i prayed. feeling is he really up there listening to me the worst of his soldiers in this war. but i am his soldier and i am scared and weak but i know i have to fight this war. if not for me, for his future soldiers (my children). then i remembered the "Footprints in the Sand"poem. I found yours and read it aloud to myself and i know i am going to be okay. I will keep fighting the fight and know satan is only as good as i let him. my general carries me through.

Never has there been a poem, as inspirational, as this to me, in my quest to see better days, and perfect romantic nights, during my Quiet Storms, I have discovered an array of Paradise stars, that rise up in me, knowing, the abilities the Lord has, to provide us with our Freedoms, and in doing so, giving us the ability to live, as stars, amoungst each other, with an unconditional love for a world, of possibilities for us all. Thank you to the Lord, for providing us with a world, that he believed we should all flourish in, and to God, who gave us the opportunity to believe in his Paradise, because through the both of them, our Footprints In The Sand, with the Lord, could not have been made possible!!!

I love this verse.
Last year, my mums Leaukemia came back for the second time after being in remission for 12 months.

Her only hope was a bone marrow transplant from a donor.
All we know, it was young man in 20s from Germany.
We dont know who he is...but both mum and I are eternally grateful to him..
And to God as well.
I prayed to God, mums Leaukemia would never return...But in responce we got a perfect match for her in the way of a donor.

I would like to thank both God and the donor.

This poem means the world to me. On Christmas eve I ran away from home because I had a lot going on in my life and needed a way out. I stayed in an old house that no one lived in at the time. I had not eaten anything in four days and the only person that I wanted to be with was my dog. Late at night when everyone was sleeping I went back to my house to get my dog and brought him back to that old house were I was staying. The next morning the state police had found me in the old house, but I couldn't understand how they new were i was hiding. They told me that they followed my foot steps in the snow from my house all the way to the old house were I was hiding. A day goes by an I started to think. When I had left to go get my dog there was no snow on the ground and there was none on the ground when I got back. So whose footsteps were those in the snow? God works in mysterious ways and it was those footsteps that changed my life.

Alas, whilst I am not truly Christian (or really religious on that notion) It is a beautiful poem that speak to the heart. There's always someone to lean on in times of need, whether it be God or a friend, there's someone there. It puts my heart at ease knowing that.

Mandisa - I understand how you feel, truly I do. I had a terrible upbringing and at 16yrs old I was honestly ready to end it all as I was certain no-one would care. I'm still looking for that friend but find only those who are greedy and horrid. I am from the south east of England. I hope life improves for you soon.

Footprints in the Sand

Tonight at dinner I noticed my friend's medallion illustrating this poem. I will use the poem in my Bible Study tomorrow to illustrate how Job could not see the hand of God, nor understand his suffering, but he trusted implicitly in His love, mercy, and justice. In the end God blessed him immensely. As the Apostle Paul put it, "We walk by faith and not by sight.

I so want to believe in God yet as I look at all the suffering and illness, together with evil that restrains us from making our lives what they should be, and the pain my sister is going through, I find it impossible to do so.
Though when I read Footprints, something stirs my emotions and urges me to look inside at "something" that seems to be with me.

1. Upon the shore, I walked with Him at even
And I looked back upon the path we'd trod
And in the sand I traced our way at even
And I was glad I'd walked through life with God:
For side by side we'd journeyed through together
All through the world's wide wilderness of care
And side by side we'd journeyed through to even:
Safe at his side the Lord my God had brought me here.

2. But in my joy I caught a strain of sadness
To give me pause when thinking of my way
For on the shore I saw he'd left me lonely
When I had most the need of him to stay:
When I was tried he'd left me worn and wandering,
He'd left me lone when I was fighting fears,
He'd let me tread the steepest slopes in solitude
Before he came back to my side to dry my tears.

3. But then the Lord drew near to me in comfort
And in his tenderness he made it plain
That in the times when dread and darkness threatened
He was my shield and shelter from the pain:
For on his shoulders he was gently bearing
And on his shoulders I from harm was free:
The single trace of footprints of the Master,
The single trace of footprints shows he carried me.

4. So on the shore I walk with Him at even;
I face the latter days of life secure,
For if my pilgrimage reserves me sorrow
The footprints show that He is strong and sure:
If I am near the gates of heaven weary,
No longer strong enough to stride alone
The footprints show that he is there to carry me:
The footprints show the Lord my God will bear me home.

May be sung to 'Londonderry Air' aka 'O Danny Boy'

My favorite passage during very difficult times in my life, sent to me by my father years ago. Thank you for posting this beautiful piece.

This is a lovely poem and it's been a great comfort to many people. It isn't from the Bible. The only time God's footprints are mentioned in the Bible is in Psalm 77 when the writer describes the people of God crossing the Red Sea and away from slavery in Egypt. He says to God;
"Your path led through the sea, your way through the mighty waters, though your footprints were not seen."
At a time of great crisis for God's people, God's footprints could not be seen at all... but he was with them every step of the way.
