Footprints in the Sand

Footprints in the Sand, a beautiful poem!

One night I dreamed a dream.
As I was walking along the beach with my Lord.
Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life.
For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand,
One belonging to me and one to my Lord.

After the last scene of my life flashed before me,
I looked back at the footprints in the sand.
I noticed that at many times along the path of my life,
especially at the very lowest and saddest times,
there was only one set of footprints.

This really troubled me, so I asked the Lord about it.
"Lord, you said once I decided to follow you,
You'd walk with me all the way.
But I noticed that during the saddest and most troublesome times of my life,
there was only one set of footprints.
I don't understand why, when I needed You the most, You would leave me."

He whispered, "My precious child, I love you and will never leave you
Never, ever, during your trials and testings.
When you saw only one set of footprints,
It was then that I carried you."

I read this poem when I was 18 now 30 years later I have revisited it. It always brings comfort through challenging times. It helps to explain how life goes on even when there seems to be no hope. I hope it continues to being strength and hope to all. God has given me the strength to keep on going through bereavement, divorce and the aftermath

First time I heard this poem, I instantly loved it. I actually cried the first time I heard it. After a while, I thought of this poem as a story. You know putting in myself as the man and the hardships I have had to go through. When I look back at this poem, it really shows how strong and willing God is to help and keep his children safe. This is a reason Footprints in the Sand is one of my favorite poems.

We loved this poem so much that we made a bookmark of our father's obituary on one side and this poem on the other side. It was a reminder of how our dad was always there for us, just the same way that our Savior, The Lord Jesus Christ, is always there for us! He loves us all and doesn't want us to go through this life alone. He does truly exist and will be there to carry us when we need Him!

This poem honestly explains my life so much. I am a burn survivor of 12 years, burned at the age of 4 on 43% of my body. WIth this came years of bullying and so much more at school and life, plus many other medical problems came up due to this. I am at my 35th surgery, a bunch of hospitalizations, hundreds of days in the hospital, and just a rough life. And every time I have a rough time, I read this. And think of the time I was in a coma and God summoned me to Heaven and let me see him, walk with him, talk with him, and sent me back because he knew I had more to do. I want to be a minister and a motivational speaker because of all this, and this poem definitely will help me in many of my speeches and talks.

I love this poem I've been ill since 1972 and if my Lord,my God wouldn't be there for me each and everyday especially when it gets real rough, I wouldn't be here today to see the lights of my life which include my father, husband, children, grand d children , brothers and sisters and I have just been blessed with a great grandchild. How much more blessed could I be. I have no gripes or complaints cause I have been truly blessed.

All we do is only dust in the wind, or, in the terms of this poem, fragile scratches on the sand's shifting surface.

Rob

I would like to propose a slightly different interpretation of this poem, in the spirit of lively debate: perhaps the poet means to draw our attention to the transience of life itself, by which I mean to say, ALL our works are only footprints in the sand. The actions of nature cast their pall over the poem. We know the speaker walks upon the beach at the tideline, suggesting the inevitable: that the mean ocean will, so quickly, wash the prints--these frail reminders of his/her presence on the earth--away. For even those footsteps which we attribute to Jesus, the God in mortal flesh, will, it may be presumed, disappear by morning.

I am looking for a poem associated with a picture of Santa Claus kneeling beside baby Jesus in the manger. It begins with "My dear precious Jesus I did not mean to take your place; I only bring toys and things and you bring love and grace. People give me a list of wishes and hope that they come true, but you hear prayers of the heart and promise your will to do." I ordered the print of the picture, but would like to have the poem to frame also. Could you help me with this?

Cecelia, I hope that your daughter starts to flourish in her new environment. Stay in touch with her teachers and school staff, and if she continues to be bullied pull her out. I don't know if homeschooling is a possibility, but there are wonderful options these days with great support systems.

My earliest memories are of church and this particular poem in our bathroom. I loved this poem and new it's words by rote. While driving home from the store last night, my daughter and I had a conversation about talking to the lord. She immediately began to cry and said that she does talk to the lord but that he doesn't hear her. I promised her that the lord hears her and I opened this passage about footsteps in the sand, and how sometimes her prayers might go unanswered but that it didn't mean he wasn't listening, only that he had a plan for her life and sometimes unanswered prayers were his way of knowing what she really needed and didn't need in life. But she is only just now turned eleven and carries the weight of the world on her shoulders. Her brother and other girls were killed in a wreck coming home from a game, none of them were driving, and yet the driver lived, she had prayed that if he would only be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life, she would be blessed. He never even made it to the hospital. She is bullied at school because she is new there and an easy target because she is so soft hearted and befriends kids that others might shun. Disturbingly enough, I was just called to the principals office because their are rumors being spread around that she wants to kill herself. She swears she would never say or do anything like that, that she wants to have a long life with kids and a husband, and that the bullies started that lie, but yet I worry. She says she prays for her daddy to have a lot of money, and though she wants for nothing, we, like most people live from paycheck to paycheck. She is such a good girl that I worry this big old world will devour her when it is time for me to let her go out into it. And yet, I do not wish to harden her heart and expose her to all the cruelties in life so as to prepare her for them. So why did I comment on this page? I don't know. I saw the comment section and had to tell someone. I know I will never see this post again, and no one I know will ever see it. But I'm sending it out into this big universe, like throwing a bottle with a letter out into the ocean, never expecting to see it again, nor be seen

This poem is so amazing . . . I'm literally crying right now. My grandfather died, two years ago in a couple weeks, and I was looking through my old papers and found a paper in my Bible that said, "Footprints in the Sand". I decided to do a Google search and found this. I have been feeling quite alone the past few weeks and even about two years ago when my grandfather first died. I think God for people still posting things like this, showing everyone that they're not alone. Thank you.

God The Creator
God created the Universe which included Heaven and Hell,
and in his likeness he created man, and gave him the Earth to dwell.
All God asked from his creation, that they prosper and live in peace,
Worship him on given days with a prayer, before they went to sleep.
This simple task was way too much for Man, who had come to learn of greed,
who soon forgot about the God, who had given him all he would need.
But God was forgiving and sent a prophet, Jesus was his name,
to lead the corrupted back to God, and for them he would take the blame.
But Man had grown accustomed, to living a life without a God,
and before Jesus had the chance, Man nailed him to a cross.
As you can imagine God was outraged and turned his back on Man,
If this was the way Man wanted to play, then God could play this game.
Many years passed as we all know them, and man grew more corrupt,
and still God turned his back on man, no more would he interrupt.
Let man make his own mistakes, God would interfere no more,
for the day will arrive when man will decide, for their God they would implore.
Now man had abused all he was given, and the Earth could yield no more,
man had taken all he could and still he chose to ignore.
Then finally when there was nothing left and mankind faced the abyss,
he fell to his knees and begged to God, and asked him to forgive.
Always forgiving this mighty Being, God decided one more chance.
to save mankind from destroying themselves,
he would turn once more and glance.

It is clearly sad to remember how someone tried to forge the work of Mary Stevenson, who wrote such a beautiful poem at the time, I am glad she took back her name, and her art work, and would like to remind others that although people claim to follow religion, there are many frauds, who get what they deserve in the end, when it hits them hardest. Thank you to the Lord for the constant justice that is served, and for never losing sight of the truth, for you are the truth, and the light at the end of the tunnel, in the most darkest moments of my life, I follow your Footprints, always, and Forever................Love, Lily

God does so many miricals, God can help each and every one of us you just have to believe and never loose faith in God because even through the toughest times in your life God will be with you, maybe sometimes it doesn't seem like it but he is, you just have to pray and believe. I myself did many bad things in my life and I didn't read the bible much I just didn't really care, then one day I went to this prayer and I listened to pastors preaching about repentance and I repented and I got baptized by the Holy Spirit, God is amazing never loose hope ❀️ This is an amazing poem

It's true, it can often seem that you are totally alone during life's toughest times. I've been blessed by this poem so many times throughout my adult life. It reiterates what Jesus says in His Word ... I will never leave you or forsake you. What a wonderful loving heavenly Father we have, what a God of compassion and understanding.

and here is a poem by ted berrigan:

Before I began life this time
I took a crash course in Counter-Intelligence
Once here I signed in, see name below, and added
Some words remembered from an earlier time,
"The intention of the organism is to survive."
My earliest, & happiest, memories pre-date WWII,
They involve a glass slipper & a helpless blue rose
In a slender blue single-rose vase: Mine
Was a story without a plot. The days of my years
Folded into one another, an easy fit, in which
I made money & spent it, learned to dance & forgot, gave
Blood, regained my poise, & verbalized myself a place
In Society. 101 St. Mark's Place, apt. 12A, NYC 10009
New York. Friends appeared & disappeared, or wigged out,
Or stayed; inspiring strangers sadly died; everyone
I ever knew aged tremendously, except me. I remained
Somewhere between 2 and 9 years old. But frequent
Reification of my own experiences delivered to me
Several new vocabularies, I loved that almost most of all.
I once had the honor of meeting Beckett & I dug him.
The pills kept me going, until now. Love, & work,
Were my great happinesses, that other people die the source
Of my great, terrible, & inarticulate one grief. In my time
I grew tall & huge of frame, obviously possessed
Of a disconnected head, I had a perfect heart. The end
Came quickly & completely without pain, one quiet night as I
Was sitting, writing, next to you in bed, words chosen randomly
From a tired brain, it, like them, suitable, & fitting.
Let none regret my end who called me friend.

For those of you who like music, there is a song by the British Christian folk-singer Dougie MacLean that has a very similar theme to it.
It's called "Ready for the Storm," and you can find it on YouTube.
It's probably also on Spotify, Rhapsody, Grooveshark, etcetc.
Hope you enjoy.

My mum picked out this poem for my baby who died after 17 days of life, being born extrmely prematurely! Unfortunately my mum herself passed away about 3 years ago, and i stood up infront of a packed church and read that poem out, which afterwards, i was able to let go of my grief and sorrow ! And i thought to myself when i look back at times in my life i will see only one set of footprints around that time! And i strongly believe the lord does carry us through all tough times! So i pray that anyone else that reads it gets the same comfort from it that i did!!x

Britney, the third paragraph means that God has left the person while they are walking on the beach, even though He said He would not leave the person. But because God does not necessarily have feet, it is unclear whether the person is really walking alone on the beach or not. Is God a ghost? What kind of feet might He have? Sometimes I like to walk alone.

Beautiful poem, I get goose bumps every time I read it. I do this poem too
As children bring their broken toys
with tears for us to mend
I took my broken toys to God
because he was my friend

But instead of leaving him
in peace to work alone
I hung around and tried to help
in ways which were my own

At last I snatched them back and cried
"How could you be so slow"
"My child" he said "What could I do"
"You never did let go"

This poem has taught me that I don't have to hang on and always try to be in the driving seat, and that he will take some of our burden away from us and that for me also makes me feel safe, knowing he is the there for us all

Bless you sweet jesus

here is another poem by WB Yeats:

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: a waste of desert sand;
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Wind shadows of the indignant desert birds.

The darkness drops again but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

Bob Schofield

Ms. Eringobrau!I commend you for seeking out the love of Jesus and teaching them right from wrong. I am reminded that most of us chose what church and what preacher or teacher we attach ourselves to! But the Disciples of Jesus didn't have that prerogative . You see Jesus chose all of them publicly. You and I have also been chosen by Jesus, to follow Him and the path He has laid out for us! He did this so that we may bear the fruit of His teaching when we accept Him as Lord and Savior. Jesus said ask anything in my name and the Father will give it to you. He (Jesus) then gave a command (John 15-17) "Love one another".

today i cried and felt as though satan had got me good, that he was the best at his game and he won. you see, this morning everything was finally going great. the homework was done, my youngest was at his best, not so much screaming and yelling as usual. the breakfast was done. kids off to school in time. but, of course, i was in and satan got me good. something very important for my one child was left out. so terrible was this that i broke down and cried. then i prayed. feeling is he really up there listening to me the worst of his soldiers in this war. but i am his soldier and i am scared and weak but i know i have to fight this war. if not for me, for his future soldiers (my children). then i remembered the "Footprints in the Sand"poem. I found yours and read it aloud to myself and i know i am going to be okay. I will keep fighting the fight and know satan is only as good as i let him. my general carries me through.

There is NONE like you. I love you so much. You are so good to ALL of us & we would be so lost without you. I will praise your name until the end of time. Thank you for saving me. God you are awesome!

This poem is right on the nose with me.
I have been through so much pain, horror, and depression in my life.
I am truly blessed my mom recited this to me the last time she was alive.
Then3 days later she passed away.
My mom lead me backto Christ the last time
she was alive.
Know she is in Heaven. This poem is very special to me

Never has there been a poem, as inspirational, as this to me, in my quest to see better days, and perfect romantic nights, during my Quiet Storms, I have discovered an array of Paradise stars, that rise up in me, knowing, the abilities the Lord has, to provide us with our Freedoms, and in doing so, giving us the ability to live, as stars, amoungst each other, with an unconditional love for a world, of possibilities for us all. Thank you to the Lord, for providing us with a world, that he believed we should all flourish in, and to God, who gave us the opportunity to believe in his Paradise, because through the both of them, our Footprints In The Sand, with the Lord, could not have been made possible!!!

This is the rock on which a search out of despair can be built, albeit step by tiny step. Read in conjunction with the serenity prayer ("give me the courage to change the things I can change, accept those things I cannot change - and the wisdom to know the difference") trust in oneself, and in other, can grow.

I love this verse.
Last year, my mums Leaukemia came back for the second time after being in remission for 12 months.

Her only hope was a bone marrow transplant from a donor.
All we know, it was young man in 20s from Germany.
We dont know who he is...but both mum and I are eternally grateful to him..
And to God as well.
I prayed to God, mums Leaukemia would never return...But in responce we got a perfect match for her in the way of a donor.

I would like to thank both God and the donor.

This poem means the world to me. On Christmas eve I ran away from home because I had a lot going on in my life and needed a way out. I stayed in an old house that no one lived in at the time. I had not eaten anything in four days and the only person that I wanted to be with was my dog. Late at night when everyone was sleeping I went back to my house to get my dog and brought him back to that old house were I was staying. The next morning the state police had found me in the old house, but I couldn't understand how they new were i was hiding. They told me that they followed my foot steps in the snow from my house all the way to the old house were I was hiding. A day goes by an I started to think. When I had left to go get my dog there was no snow on the ground and there was none on the ground when I got back. So whose footsteps were those in the snow? God works in mysterious ways and it was those footsteps that changed my life.

Tonight at dinner I noticed my friend's medallion illustrating this poem. I will use the poem in my Bible Study tomorrow to illustrate how Job could not see the hand of God, nor understand his suffering, but he trusted implicitly in His love, mercy, and justice. In the end God blessed him immensely. As the Apostle Paul put it, "We walk by faith and not by sight.

Jord

I so want to believe in God yet as I look at all the suffering and illness, together with evil that restrains us from making our lives what they should be, and the pain my sister is going through, I find it impossible to do so.
Though when I read Footprints, something stirs my emotions and urges me to look inside at "something" that seems to be with me.

1. Upon the shore, I walked with Him at even
And I looked back upon the path we'd trod
And in the sand I traced our way at even
And I was glad I'd walked through life with God:
For side by side we'd journeyed through together
All through the world's wide wilderness of care
And side by side we'd journeyed through to even:
Safe at his side the Lord my God had brought me here.

2. But in my joy I caught a strain of sadness
To give me pause when thinking of my way
For on the shore I saw he'd left me lonely
When I had most the need of him to stay:
When I was tried he'd left me worn and wandering,
He'd left me lone when I was fighting fears,
He'd let me tread the steepest slopes in solitude
Before he came back to my side to dry my tears.

3. But then the Lord drew near to me in comfort
And in his tenderness he made it plain
That in the times when dread and darkness threatened
He was my shield and shelter from the pain:
For on his shoulders he was gently bearing
And on his shoulders I from harm was free:
The single trace of footprints of the Master,
The single trace of footprints shows he carried me.

4. So on the shore I walk with Him at even;
I face the latter days of life secure,
For if my pilgrimage reserves me sorrow
The footprints show that He is strong and sure:
If I am near the gates of heaven weary,
No longer strong enough to stride alone
The footprints show that he is there to carry me:
The footprints show the Lord my God will bear me home.

May be sung to 'Londonderry Air' aka 'O Danny Boy'

Trevor

This is a lovely poem and it's been a great comfort to many people. It isn't from the Bible. The only time God's footprints are mentioned in the Bible is in Psalm 77 when the writer describes the people of God crossing the Red Sea and away from slavery in Egypt. He says to God;
"Your path led through the sea, your way through the mighty waters, though your footprints were not seen."
At a time of great crisis for God's people, God's footprints could not be seen at all... but he was with them every step of the way.
